Newport Squash Club was home to the excellent Pointfore Junior Teams Tournament last weekend. Over 140 players from clubs all over Wales took part and Newport fielded seven teams by far the most from any club: two at under 11, 1 at under 13, two at under 15 and two at under 17. Our teams did really well coming 3rd at under 11, 3rd at under 13, 1st and 4th at under 15, and 2nd and 5th at under 17. Several players also played well for us in older age groups than usual. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and supporting their team mates so enthusiastically. Thanks to Squash Wales for running the event and to our visitors for making it such a success. An error was made in recording the results for week 3 of the Summer Teams League. Instead of losing, Richard Imm of Newport 4 beat Jamie Moxem of Newport 1 3-0. This means that Newport 4 scored 12 points and instead of 9. The real story from the league for last week should have been that Newport 4 knocked Ponty off the top spot in the table! Due to his success in the Hungarian Primavera 2008 Open, Rob Sutherland has risen to 95 in the PSA World Rankings published for June. He hopes to build on that success when he plays in the Chennai Open in India this week. He is seeded 8 and plays his Round One Match against a qualifier this Thursday 3rd July. Rob Sutherland beat Morten Sorensen of Denmark 12/10, 6/11, 11/9, 11/6 to secure a place in the semi-final of the 2008 Primarvera Open in Kecskemet, Hungary yesterday. As a community initiative in conjunction with the Sports Council for Wales and Newport City Council, Newport Squash Rackets Club are hosting about 50 children from Malpas Church In Wales Junior School every Friday for the next six weeks to give them an opportunity to experience the sport of Squash.

Each week the kids will get a 30 minute, high quality coaching session from our Club Professional Greg Tippings. At the end of the course they will have had the opportunity to experience a healthy, fast and exciting new sport. They will also be equipped with the basic skills necessary to take it further at our Club if they enjoy it. You can learn more about our fantastic Junior Squash programme in the Juniors section of this site.

This regular community initiative is open to any primary school in the Newport area. The 2007/8 season has been a good one for our teams that represent the Club in the South Wales and Gwent County Squash Leagues.

The South Wales Squash League is there to promote competitive squash in South Wales. It consists of the Premier, First and Second divisions. The Premier Division consists of 12 teams divided into two sections of six. The First and Second divisions are also regionalised into East and West and have two sections where appropriate. Each group of six teams plays each other twice in a round-robin format home and away during the season. The winner of each section gains promotion to the next section or league. The winners of the County Leagues are eligible for promotion to the South Wales League. In 2007/8 we had eight teams representing the Club in these leagues.

The 1st Team captained by Greg Tippings were runners up to St Mellons in the South Wales Premier Section A League beaten by just one point.

The 2nd Team captained by Andrew Harris convincingly topped the Premier Section B and gained promotion to Premier Section A. This is a fantastic result as we will be the only club in Wales to have two teams in the top league next season.

The 3rd Team captained by Mark Huxtable narrowly lost 3-2 in a playoff against Caldicot for promotion to Premier Section A. We were so close to having three teams in the top league but I suppose we have to give the other teams a chance and it would be boring just playing each other at the Club ;)

The 4th Team captained by Jason Salisbury regrettably got relegated from Division One East Section A along with the 5th Team captained by Ian Hall. We're sure they will be back up next year.

The 6th Team captained by Gareth Evans gained promotion back into the Welsh League from Gwent One by topping it by a massive 44 points! Well done boys, you did us proud. That makes six teams in the Welsh League, more than any other Club.

The 7th Team captained by Mike Birch remain in Gwent One.

The 8th Team captained by Dave Honeywood unfortunately got relegated from Gwent Two.

For the 2008/9 season, the club rankings will determine selection for the teams. Sam Huxtable beat Ryan Blud in the thrilling five set final of the 2008 Rob Westerberg Memorial Handicap Tournament. The match was eventually decided by a tie break in the fifth game that went to 17-15. Rory Challenger won the Plate competition overcoming George Evans 2-0. 32 players competed in the event with a good mixture of adults and juniors taking part. A great weekend was had by all!

The tournament is held every year in memory of Rob Westerberg a great member of the Club who died tragically in 1998 at the age of 34. Rob was an extremely keen, enthusiastic member and captain of the 6th team. It was great to see Rob Westerberg's brother watching the final in his memory.

Two new ladders have been started to determine rankings of players at the Club: one for junior members and one for seniors. Positions in the senior ladder at the end of the summer will dictate what team you play for in the inter-club leagues for the 2008/9 season. There will be no exceptions to this. Participation in the rankings ladder is done solely via this website. Once you are registered and accepted onto the ladder, you will be able to issue challenges to players up to 3 positions above you and record the results of your matches once they are played. Your initial position in the ladder will be set in the order that you joined. So when you first join, you will have two free challenges that you may use with anyone in the ladder to avoid having to play lots of one-sided matches. Use them wisely! Welcome to the brand spanking new and improved version of our Club website! In addition to being a good source of information for the outside world, our main aim with this version of the site is to make it an invaluable resource for our members.

Anything you need to know about what is happening at the club should be in here. The site will be updated with news a couple of times a week during the main playing season. You will need to come here to participate in the ladder, enter competitions and soon to book a court so it will be easy to stay in touch. We also have RSS feeds on the site so that your web browser or email program can tell you if there is anything new to see. Information will appear here before it reaches the club notice boards.

Use the menu bar on the left hand side of the page, have a browse around and let us know what you think by dropping us an email. We would particularly like to know if you see any mistakes or think something is missing - especially if that would motivate you to look here more often. You will probably see a lot of changes over the first couple of months as we evolve the site based on your feedback.
